It is estimated that more than 180 million people in India suffer from arthritis. An extremely painful disorder that affects the musculoskeletal system, arthritis, which was earlier a considered a disease that only affects the elderly, is now becoming a serious health threat with thousands of people as young as 20 being diagnosed with it.
Arthritis is severe inflammation in one more joints, which impairs a person’s ability to move around and perform even the simplest of tasks. A disorder that cannot be cured with medicines, the main symptoms include pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints. There are over 100 types of arthritis, of which osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common, especially in India.
Osteoarthritis is a condition wherein the cartilage covering the bone gradually wears off, causing the bones to rub against each other. It can occur in one or more joints and can be really painful. Osteoarthritis is seen more in women, especially after menopause.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory form of arthritis, which attacks the synovial membrane, resulting in swelling and pain. If left untreated, rheumatoid arthritis can lead to severe deformities.
