Aster Medcity conducted a cyclothon on 13 August 2016, to mark Organ Donation Day to promote awareness about organ donation
The cyclothon flagged off from Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kadavanthara in the morning by prominent cinestar MR Kunchacko Boban and Dr. Harish Pillai, CEO, Aster Medcity. The 10 km. ride over South Overbridge and onto M. G. Road, then via Marine Drive ended at the stadium.
Aster Medcity also instituted an annual award of excellence in the name of Bhavana Lakshmi, a six-year student of St Mary’s UP School, Chitoor who donated her organs after death last year. The award certificate handed over to Mr Murthy, father of Bhavana Lakshmi and Ms Shajimol K Thomas, Headmistress of the school by MR Kunchacko Boban and Dr. Harish Pillai.
Addressing the participants of the rally Mr Kunchaco Boban called for every body’s support for the noble cause of organ donations. He said organs are needed much more than available today.
Drawing attention to the magnitude of problem of the organ transplants in the country Dr. Harish Pillai, CEO, Aster Medcity said, ‘The country needs 1.5 renal and 20,000 kidney transplants and ‘Gift a Life’ through organ donation is very important for the sake of humanity’
About 150 cyclists belonging to all walks of life including number of school children participated in the ‘Gift a Life’ Cyclothon.
Dr Mathew Jacob. Dr G N Rameh, Dr Charles Panackel , YR Vinod from Aster Medcity , Mr Ranjith VR (Track & Trail) ,SAS Nawaz ,Mr Murty and Prasanna Murthy (parents of Bhavan Lakshmi) were also present.
