A workshop on Complex Chronic Total Occlusion Angioplasty with IVUS/OCT guidance was conducted at the Centre of Excellence in Cardiac Sciences, Aster Medcity on the 6th and 7th of July 2018. Led by our Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Raja Sekhar Varma, the workshop, which included an interactive symposium on the latest advances / retrograde techniques in CTO angioplasty based on interesting cases, was attended by top cardiologists from various parts of Kerala.
The live workshop at Aster Medcity had Dr. Raja Sekhar Varma performing highly advanced CTO procedures in four patients with extremely complex coronary blockages, with image guidance by Dr. Vijaykumar, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai and support of Dr. Sunil Shivdas, Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, Aster Medcity, who assisted in one of the cases.
Of the angioplasties performed, three cases were exceptionally successful and one – moderately successful. There were no major complications during or after the procedures. All four patients have been discharged after uneventful recovery.
The workshop proved to be a great learning experience to participants as every step and technical point pertaining to the procedures were discussed in detail.
The interactive symposium, which was held at The Taj, featured speakers including Dr. Jimmy George, Cardiologist, Lisie Hospital, who presented three interesting cases. Dr. Raja Sekhar Varma spoke about retrograde techniques in CTO angioplasty based on cases performed at Aster Medcity.
The workshop was organised under the able guidance of Dr. Anil Kumar, Lead Senior Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, with the support of Dr. Sunil Shivdas, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Praveen Sreekumar, Consultant – Cardiac Electrophysiology, and the entire team of Nurses and Technologists at the Cathlab in Aster Medcity.
