Understanding Kidney Stones
A painful condition, kidney stones form when the kidneys are unable to get rid of waste products like calcium, oxalate and phosphate. These stay back in the kidney and form crystals, which are referred to as ‘Kidney Stones’. In some people, the reason for kidney stone formation may be the lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together. There are several types of kidney stones depending on the cause of stone formation.
If you have a kidney stone, you wouldn’t most probably know it until it moves into the ureter or the tube that connects the kidneys and the bladder. Kidney stones can be the size of grain of sand to that of a golf ball. Hence it’s important to seek immediate medical help, especially if you are in pain.These stones might take days or weeks to pass through urine, but if it does not, then there is a high risk of permanent urinary/ kidney damage
Look out for the following symptoms:
1. Pain below the ribs, in the side and back
2. Pain lasts for 20 minutes to an hour
3. Pain radiates like waves from he side and back to the lower abdomen
4. Nausea/ vomiting
5. Bloody/ cloudy/ smelly urine
6. Strong, uncontrollable urge to pass urine
7. Pain while urinating
8. Fever with chills
