Prostate Enlargement: Know The Facts

Do you feel the need to urinate often? Are your trips to the restroom at night increasing? Do you feel that your bladder isn’t fully empty in spite of passing urine? It’s time you visited an Urologist, all these could be symptoms of prostate enlargement.

Enlargement of the prostate gland or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common, age-related issue in men above 40. This is a condition wherein the Prostate or the gland that surrounds the urethra (the tube through which urine is emptied from the bladder) grows in size and presses against it, causing obstruction and difficulty in passing urine.

As the urethra narrows, the bladder contracts forcefully to push urine out of the body. With time, the bladder muscle gradually becomes thicker and extremely sensitive and contracts even when it contains only a small amount of urine, causing the need to urinate frequently. Eventually, the bladder muscle will not be able to overcome the effect of the narrowed urethra, leading to urine retention.

BPH is considered a normal part of the ageing process, caused by changes in hormones and cell growth. It occurs in almost all men as they age, but some of them don’t experience any symptoms at all. Benign/ non-cancerous in nature, this is is usually not a serious problem. BPH does not cause prostate cancer, the ability to father children or erection problems. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is also known as benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Symptoms

  • Enlargement of the prostate can cause:
  • Trouble getting a urine stream started and completely stopped
  • A weak urine stream
  • Bladder is not completely empty after urination
  • Frequent, compulsive need to urinate
  • Sleep gets disturbed due to frequent trips to the restroom
  • Continued dribbling of urine
  • In some cases, prostate enlargement may lead to bladder blockage, making it impossible or extremely hard to pass urine. This may in turn lead to urine retention, bladder infections and kidney damage

When to seek medical help

If you notice any symptom of prostate enlargement, seek immediate advice from an Urologist

Your doctor can tell you how severe the enlargement is and recommend medical or surgical management

There are many treatment options available these days, you can discuss the same with your doctor and arrive at a decision

Though BPH is benign, cases of prostate cancers are also reported widely. It’s good to make sure that everything is okay.
