4 Habits That Cause Neurological Disorders

It’s a fact: stress plays havoc on your body. When you are stressed, your body switches on what’s called the “fight or flight” mode, wherein the nervous system signals the adrenalin gland to release adrenalin and cortisol. This causes increase in heart rate and in turn blood pressure, which can at times lead to stroke. Stress can also cause neurological symptoms like nerve pain, tingling of feet and hands, dizziness and lightheadedness, headaches, vision problems, memory loss and confusion. So try to de-stress and take your mind off negative thoughts. Meditation and prayers help immensely. Listen to calming music, do what you love or just go for a walk. A good night’s sleep is also a great relaxant.

2. Smoking

Every time you smoke, your neurological health goes up in smoke. Nicotine affects the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and its receptor. This receptor is located in many brain structures and body organs; and carries messages related to respiration, heart rate, memory, alertness, and muscle movement. So when you smoke, you make yourself prone to neurological disorders like migraine, peripheral neuropathy, seizures and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (a neurodegenerative disorder). So quit smoking and clear up your brain.

3. Alcohol

Social drinking is fine, but not regular drinking. Alcohol alters levels of certain nutrients in your body like thiamine (vitamin B1), folate (vitamin B9), and vitamins B6 and B12, which are required for proper nerve function. Alcohol-related neurologic disease include Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome alcoholic neuropathy, alcoholic cerebellar degeneration, alcoholic myopathy fetal alcohol syndrome, alcohol withdrawal syndrome, dementia and other cognitive deficits.

4. Self-medication

Indiscriminate use of medicines is a major reason for nervous problems. Wrong/ overdose of medicines impair brain function, leading to several complications. So next time you’re not feeling well, consult a doctor and make sure you have the right medicines, in the right dosage.
