Simple Ways To Clean-Up Your Lungs

Here are some simple ways to cleanse your lungs and keep them healthy:

Quit Smoking

Cigarette smoke pollutes your lungs by coating it sticky, black tar, which can cause serious respiratory illnesses like lung cancer. So the first step is to say “NO” to cigarettes. Quitting cigarettes will definitely be tough task, but not an impossible one if you set your mind to it. There are millions of smokers – infact chain smokers- who’ve kicked the butt, so you can too.

Exercise

Physical activity boosts your lung power and helps it function better. Exercise for at least 40 minutes every day. Brisk walking is the easiest form of exercise, for the body carries its own weight while walking.

Drink Lots Of Water

It’s important to keep your body hydrated, as water keeps your lungs moisturised and healthy. Drink plenty of water to ensure that your lungs get enough moisture to function well. Besides, water also helps flush out toxins including nicotine from your body.

Eat Healthy

Your lungs need a good diet to stay healthy. Have food that’s rich in anti-oxidants including vegetables, green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, sprouted pulses and green tea. Avoid processed meat, fast food, frozen food and high-fat dairy products.

Relieve stress

Yoga, meditation, deep breathing…stress-relieving therapies can help you breathe better by relaxing your lungs and boosting your lung capacity.

Wear A Mask

The air quality in cities is dropping dangerously. The air we breathe in are loaded with pollutants, exhaust fumes, chemical vapours, poisonous gases, particulate matter and pollen suspensions. The only way to protect your lungs from air pollution is to wear an N90/ N95 mask, especially when you are riding/ travelling on two-wheelers. You should also wear a protective mask when you handle cleaning chemicals at home.

Keep Your Home Clean

Most of us aren’t aware of the fact that the reasons for recurring respiratory diseases can be traced to our own homes. Keep your homes clean, always. Remove dust and cobwebs from shelves, ceilings and furniture once a week.

Vacuum clean carpets and curtains regularly so that there is no “invisible dust accumulation”. Also, remove pet hair/dander from furniture, carpets and beds to prevent allergies and asthma.

Keep The Windows Open

To keep your lungs healthy, you need breathe fresh air. So keep the windows (as long as you can) to get rid of stale air and odours. In case of high pollution levels, an air purifier can be of great help.

Use Household Chemicals Judiciously

Household cleaning chemicals aren’t as safe as you think, for they contain volatile organic compounds or VOCs that spew chemicals into the air. So make sure that you use these chemicals judiciously, in limited quantities and opt for non-toxic, low VOC versions as much possible.

Steam Inhalation

Soft, warm water vapour can cleanse your lungs like magic by clearing up the airways and removing congestion and mucus. Take steam inhalations at least once a week to prevent/ get relief from nasty colds, stuffy nose and allergies.
