Paediatric Palliative Care: Adding Life To Days
A child being diagnosed with a life-limiting disease is probably the worst misfortune that can befall a family. The amount of physical and mental trauma the child goes through is beyond what one can imagine. This is where the role of Paediatric Palliative Care gains relevance.
According to the Association for Children with Life-threatening Conditions and their families (ACT 2008) of United Kingdom, Paediatric Palliative Care (PPC) is “Palliative care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions is an active and total approach to care, from the point of diagnosis (or recognition) throughout the child’s life, embracing physical, emotional, social and spiritual elements through to death and beyond.”
Paediatric Palliative Care is different from Adult Palliative Care as the needs of a child are entirely different from that of an adult. Children need to be approached with a lot more patience, compassion, tenderness and understanding.Paediatric Palliative Care focuses on enhancement of quality of life of the child through holistic management of pain and other associated symptoms. The families of these children too are provided psychological counselling to help them cope up with the intense grief and live through what is probably the worst time of their lives.
