Want To Keep Your Kidneys Healthy? Drink Daily!

Did you know that not drinking enough water is the number one cause of kidney stones? Your kidneys, which are made up of 1- 1.5 million nephrons each, are your body’s filters. They filter your blood to remove toxins, chemicals and excess water from your body as urine.

However, if you don’t drink sufficient amounts of water everyday, your urine will get concentrated with increased amounts of waste products, including chemicals like oxalate, calcium, phosphate, urate, and cysteine that lead to formation of kidney stones.

An extremely painful condition, kidney stones can cause a lot of discomfort and in some cases, even lead to permanent damage of the kidneys.

Besides, when you don’t enough water, the kidney will not get sufficient fluid to process the water-soluble toxins and flush out metabolic waste through the urine. This causes toxin build-up in the body, which in turn can lead to several health complications.

Worldwide studies have proved that people who drink 2 litres of water everyday have healthier kidneys and 50% less likely to develop stones. And even in those with/ have a history of kidney stones; drinking around 2.5 litres of water everyday reduced the risk of recurrence by around 30%.

Put simply, the easiest way to keep your kidneys healthy is to drink at least 12 glasses of water everyday. And yes, make sure that you drink across the day so that your hydration levels are maintained.

So how do you know if you body is getting enough water? Check the colour of your urine. If it is very light/ pale yellow, it’s good. If it’s dark, concentrated or causes burning sensation, it’s time take to the water bottle!
